Description

In light of the high number of children with poor levels of literacy, especially among children in disadvantaged areas of the UK, it is imperative that KS1 and KS2 teachers and subject leads work together, alongside the voluntary sector, to ensure high-quality, evidence-based and engaging teaching to successfully improve literacy attainment levels. Charity ‘I CAN’ published a report in July 2021, communication charity estimating that 1.5 million children are at risk of not being able to speak or understand language at an age-appropriate level. With the publication of Ofsted’s ‘Teaching A Broad and Balanced Curriculum for Education Recovery’ published in November 2021, it was identified that at Key Stage 2 specifically, areas of concern are students who are at risk of failing to learn to read, the provision of systematic synthetic phonics teaching for all pupils who still need it, with plenty of practice and ensuring sufficient time for reading and writing, including phonics for spelling.

The Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi highlighted the importance of literacy support in the newly published “Opportunity For All: Strong Schools With Great Teachers For Your Child” White Paper (March 2022), stating that it was his vision to “introduce and implement standards that will improve children’s education, deliver the right support if they fall behind and give them the tools to lead a happy, fulfilled and successful life”, by providing new careers programme for primary schools in areas of disadvantage and improved professional development for teachers and leaders on careers education. Additionally, the White Paper has announced a £40 million fund for 24 “priority” areas among the 55 disadvantaged “education investment areas” to address particular needs, such as literacy. With this is mind, and with Covid-19 catch-up at the forefront of practitioners and policymakers’ priorities, now is the time to join this discussion to ensure that schools are continuing to deliver the highest quality primary literacy teaching.

This two day online forum will provide an opportunity to discuss best practice teaching and learning for English Literacy for Early Years, Key Stage 1 (KS1) and Key Stage 2 (KS2). Key stakeholders will share successful methods for supporting primary schools to improve English Literacy attainment levels. In addition, a range of outstanding case studies will share proven ways of raising standards of English Literacy through robust curriculum design, adopting innovative teaching methods, and working in partnership.
