RSE in Secondary Schools Conference
Countdown to Reservations End Date
Event Details
Description
From 2020, new legislation means that it will be mandatory for all schools providing secondary education in England to teach RSE. This is the first new guidance in this area in 19 years.
Despite the legislation being mandatory from next year, the government are urging schools to start embedding RSE into the curriculum from 2019.
How this subject is taught can have a crucial impact on how pupil's regard relationships for the rest of their lives. Plus there are legal requirements which will have to be adhered to when delivering this guidance.
This one day conference will provide delegates with practical advice on the development of new school policy and curriculum, and next steps for their implementation – including overcoming key challenges and potential resistance from parents, pupils and the wider community.
Learning objectives include:
• Requirements and obligations in terms of the incoming changes, and what support will be available
• How to develop policy and defining RSE in the context of the school’s ethos, safeguarding and equality policies – what it must include and working with parents
• Being prepared for opposition to policy – putting strategies in place to deal with potential issues and challenges
• The right to withdraw – ‘exceptional circumstances’ – how to decide, how to enforce, and the new rights to ‘opt in’ for pupils nearing their 16th birthday
• Staff training and CPD – strategies and techniques for teaching difficult subjects, building confidence and handling challenging pupils
• Evaluating and reviewing school policy, curriculum and educational outcomes
• How PSHE will contribute to Ofsted’s new framework, how RSE will be inspected, and preparing for inspections.
