Description

This online course is for primary and secondary school staff who are seeking guidance, strategies and resources for supporting newly arrived pupils who are new to English, including those who are refugees or asylum seekers.

Highly practical, this evidence-informed course will explore what support needs to be in place for learners who use EAL during the following stages:
• before admission
• before the pupil starts
• in their first days
• during the initial weeks.

The course will consider the key roles and responsibilities for all staff in developing a whole-school approach to supporting newly arrived pupils who are new to English.

Designed to work around the busy lives of those working in schools, this three-module online course is available for either primary or secondary practitioners. With three hours of online study over a four-week period, this course will enable delegates to work at a manageable pace with plenty of time to process course content and consider relevance to context. The course is designed to be highly interactive and collaborative, with opportunities to work with other course participants, course tutors and course material. Module Two consists of a live webinar with opportunities to ask questions and share best practice in real time.

In addition, there may be optional elements within this course intended to extend the learning experience around specific areas. These will be of greater relevance to some contexts. The optional elements are estimated to involve no more than one hour of extra study time.

Course dates: 1 - 26 March.

Module One: Pre-webinar online tasks to be completed at own pace over a seven-day period (time commitment approximately 60 minutes).

Module Two: Live interactive webinar with the course tutors:
• Primary: Wednesday 9 March 16:00-17:00 (time commitment approximately 60 minutes)
• Secondary: Thursday 10 March 16:00-17:00 (time commitment approximately 60 minutes).

Module Three:
• Post webinar online tasks to be completed at own pace over a two-week period (time commitment approximately 60 minutes).

A certificate will be awarded for successful completion of the course.
