Description

This one day workshop will instruct delegates in the use of model drawing as a valuable resource to strengthen and deepen pupils’ understanding of mathematics.

Attendees will:
• explore one of the heuristics used in the Singapore approach to teaching and learning mathematics
• investigate the progression of bar modelling from Year 1 through to Year 6, enjoying some tricky questions from Inspire Maths on the way
• explore how the bar modelling method is used to develop pupils’ understanding of mathematical concepts
• consider the bar modelling method as a valuable problem solving tool and how model drawing provides an important transition from the concrete to abstract concepts in key stages 1 and 2
• look at how bar modelling can be used to solve algebraic expressions.

This is an interactive workshop where delegates will be doing the maths, including:
• understand the use of bar modelling as a key heuristic for problem solving
• become familiar with the CPA approach and the 4 key bar models
• understand how bar modelling can be integral to the teaching and learning of mathematics from Year 1 to Year 6 and beyond
• enjoy using this powerful method to problem solve in Key Stages 1 and 2.
