Description

Proceedings will get underway with a welcome from your NEU ATL President, Kim Knappett, who will outline the priorities for her presidential year.

The morning keynote is by one of the leading figures in education, Joint NEUGeneral Secretary, Dr Mary Bousted. Mary is known for her candid and forthright views and you might even get an insight of what’s really going on behind the closed doors of government and what our priorities are as a union.

In the afternoon, Julie Robinson, Independent Schools Council General Secretary, will discuss the findings of the ISC Census 2018.

The Census has been conducted annually for the past 45 years, is an important resource for the sector, government, and policymakers. Amongst other things, Julie will report on the record number of pupils attending ISC member schools and the variety of those schools.

Before leading the ISC, Julie was Education and Training Director at the Independent Association of Prep Schools and Head of Vinehall School.

Seminar discussion groups

In the morning and afternoon, you can attend two out of three seminar groups. The seminars provide the opportunity to discuss, with colleagues from the sector, practical issues in the workplace and how together we might influence issues which affect our daily lives.

Has your pay increased by 3.5%?

In light of the announcement that state sector teachers on the main scale will receive a cost of living increase of 3.5% from September 2018, John Richardson, NEU National Official independent sector, will ask you whether your pay has increased by 3.5%?

As well as a general discussion on pay awards and what members can collectively do to influence their pay, the results of the 2018 NEU Independent Sector Pay Survey will be revealed.

John has led on independent sector for 13 years, first for ATL, now NEU.

Accidents, asbestos and other lurking dangers

If there is an accident, are you responsible? What are the lurking dangers hidden in schools?

These and many other questions will be discussed by Sarah Lyons, NEU Health & Safety lead. Members will discuss what they can do to minimize the dangers to themselves, pupils and their schools.

Sarah Lyons has worked for the NEU/NUT for over 20 years leading on health and safety issues. She is a member of the Joint Union Asbestos Committee and has worked closely with the Health and Safety Executive on several strategic education projects and is a member of the HSE MythBuster Challenge Panel.

How can we promote good employment practice?

Members of the NEU ATL Independent & Private Sector Advisory Group, IPSAG, will lead discussion on good employment practice and how we might collectively promote practical measures for the benefit of members.

Amongst other things, members will be encouraged to share effective measures that have been taken in their schools to tackle unnecessary workload.

IPSAGis made up leading members from the sector.

Summing up

At the end of the day, Deborah Parren, chair of the NEU ATL IPSAG will sum up proceedings and highlight actions going forward.

It will also be the first opportunity to find out the findings of our unique and authoritative Independent Sector Pay and Conditions Survey 2018, which are embargoed until the conference.

NEU independent sector policy and motions to annual conference

Do you have any topical issues that you think that the union should discuss? If so, IPSAG would be pleased to hear from you. In addition, they are interested to hear of any collective/policy issues that might be motions to the NEU annual conference.

Will there be any materials to take away?

NEU ATL publications will be available on the day, free of charge to members, such as Taking students off-site, the NEU ATL Work life balance toolkit, and, the NEU ATL guide to Working in the independent sector, the NEU ATL briefing on collective bargaining in the independent sector, Driving school vehicles. And there will also be some NEU freebies!
