Description

According to the Independent School Council’s (ISC) 2022 Census, 95,991 pupils were recorded as having SEND, compared to 90,298 in 2021. While 17.6% of all ISC pupils now require SEND support, 5.8% also have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) – and the importance of meeting the needs required as part of these plans has only heightened in light of the pandemic and its impact on learning and development opportunities.

All independent school staff, including senior leaders, teachers, and special and additional learning needs coordinators, have a responsibility to meet the needs of children and young people in their care, and at this one day in-person conference you will access the latest best practice and advice on enhancing your SEND provision, as well as gain an understanding of the latest expectations from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).

Key challenges to be addressed this year:
• Changing expectations following the SEND Review
• Increasing diversity in needs among children with SEND in mainstream independent settings
• Increasing social, emotional and mental health needs to balance against SEND requirements
• Recruitment of specialist support staff and ensuring quality training for all class teachers to support every child’s needs
• Continued impact of the pandemic on staff and pupils, cognitively and socially
• Access to resources and funding to deliver quality specialist support, including for pupils with EHCPs.

Learning objectives to address these challenges:
• Access updates on the SEND Review and Green Paper, and the subsequent consultation period
• Explore how to deliver specialist support to children of all ages in independent schools
• Gain legal advice and guidance for independent schools delivering SEND provision
• Learn how to effectively write, implement and review a quality SEND policy
• Discuss how to embed a graduated approach to SEND support in the classroom
• Engage with strategies to support good mental health among children with SEND.
