National Suicide Prevention Conference 2023
Countdown to Reservations End Date
Event Details
Description
In the first half of 2022 there were 2515 suicides recorded by a coroner – this figure is in line with previous years and illustrates that the fall in suicides in 2020 was only a brief respite, according to the Office for National Statistics. Moreover, suicide prevention services are now facing an increase in demand arising from a variety of factors, including the long-term consequences of the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis.
With a new Government Suicide Prevention Plan due for release this year, now is the time to reflect on the important progress being made by suicide prevention services, as well as the challenges remaining. Through sharing best practice to develop robust and inclusive services that can cope with increasing demand, organisations from across the sector can work together to deliver high quality support to those that need it.
There were 5583 suicides recorded in 2021 in England and Wales
The overall suicide rate in 2021 was 10.5 per 100,000, up from 10.0 in 2020 but below 10.8 in 2019
Men aged 50-54 have the highest suicide rate (22.5 per 100,000)
