Description

The Nuffield Foundation funds several projects aimed at increasing reading attainment for pupils at primary and secondary school level. Individually they target different aspects of learning from identifying reading disorders to increasing reading motivation, vocabulary and comprehension. This in-person seminar will feature presentations from four projects funded by the Nuffield Foundation.

Presentations:
• Identifying children at risk of reading disorder - Dr Hannah Nash, University of Leeds
• How do reading ability and practice influence vocabulary - Dr Laura Shapiro, Aston University
• Love to Read: a co-designed intervention to motivate and engage child readers - Dr Sarah McGeown, University of Edinburgh
• Reading for meaning: Reciprocal Reading Secondary for struggling readers in KS3 - Dr Maria Cockerill, Queen’s University Belfast.

Following the presentations there will be a panel discussion for researchers, practitioners and policy makers to explore promising approaches to improving reading attainment, gaps in our knowledge and to examine how knowledge can be effectively translated into practice:
• What are the most important issues to tackle in order to improve children’s reading attainment?
• What else do we need to know about how to tackle these issues?
• How can we best translate existing knowledge into workable approaches for practice?
• What are the implications for education policy?

There will also be further reflection from:
• Jonathan Douglas (Chief Executive, National Literacy Trust)
• Hydeh Fayaz (Assistant Head, St Matthews Research School, Birmingham)
• Jessie Ricketts (Professor of Language, Memory and Attention, Royal Holloway).
