Delivering Outstanding MFL Teaching at KS2
Countdown to Reservations End Date
Event Details
Description
Language learning is a key part of a broad and balanced curriculum, and since 2014 primary schools have held a legal responsibility to teach modern foreign languages (MFL). While learning languages helps develop core skills and improves communication, as well as facilitating a broader worldview among children, many schools still struggle to deliver quality MFL lessons.
British Council survey results released in July 2022 showed that one in four primary schools are not providing weekly language lessons, while a 2021 subject specific inspection series by Ofsted found significant variation in curriculum quality and highlighted disappointment at the low level planning and delivery at many schools.
With government EBacc targets on track in all areas apart from languages, it is now more important than ever before for primary school leaders and teachers to improve the quality of MFL teaching and learning.
Whether you’re a primary school leader, specialist MFL teacher, the MFL lead at your school or a native speaker member of staff supporting language learning, join with peers on this one day online training, based on the Department for Education’s KS2 Languages Programme of Study Guidance, to explore practical steps to improved teaching.
Learning objectives include:
• Review your current pedagogy in four core elements: Speaking, listening, reading and writing
• Access resources to facilitate language teaching and learning throughout KS2
• Explore new strategies for developing conversational skills and expanding vocabulary
• Examine how to better track learning through regular classroom-based assessments
• Discuss how to increase interactivity between pupils in your classroom to add to the learning experience
• Discover how to include modern cultural references in your teaching to enhance engagement
• Consider how to improve communication with MFL colleagues in secondary schools to better prepare pupils for the transition between KS2 and KS3.
