The Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Conference 2023
Countdown to Reservations End Date
Event Details
Description
There has been a long-known funding gap in SEND provision in schools, and in 2022 alone this rose by $465 million to a total of £1.3 billion, according to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. On top of this, state-funded special schools are facing a capacity crisis, with Schools Week recently reporting that staff rooms and therapy offices are being transformed into classrooms due to a lack of required space. While this has been ongoing, the Government has undergone the consultation, SEND Review: Right support, Right place, Right time, and outlined systems gaps and future recommendations for improving SEND support in schools. State comprehensive schools are currently working hard to ensure no child falls through the gaps in the system, and now must come together to share best practice on improving outcomes for pupils with SEND.
• The ONS reports that the number of pupils with SEN support has increased by 4% to 1,129,800 since 2021 and by a total of 14% since 2016
• The total number of students reported to have some type of special educational need is now about 1.49 million (16.5% of all students), according to the DfE
• The DfE also found that a quarter of students reported to have some type of special educational need are not on official SEND support.
