Description

At a time of heightened concern over teacher supply and school accountability, this one day in-person seminar will bring together researchers, policy makers and sector leaders to examine the evidence explaining the current teacher workforce challenge.

The event will feature presentations of projects funded by the Nuffield Foundation covering trends in teacher pay, shortages in subjects and by geography, teacher workload and well-being, the experience of Ofsted inspections, the pandemic’s legacy and the impact of academisation, spanning many of the topics currently being investigated by the Education Select Committee.

Presentations include:
• What explains the teacher supply challenge in England and why does it matter? - Jack Worth, National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER)
• What is the impact of academisation on teacher retention and pay in disadvantaged schools? - Dr Emma Duchini, University of Essex
• How do negative Ofsted grades affect the teacher workforce? - Dr Bernadita Munoz-Chereau, University College London
• What is the state of teacher health and well-being? - Professor John Jerrim, University College London.

The research presentations will be followed by reflections from an expert panel on the future challenges and solutions, and audience discussion.

Expert panel
• Dr Patrick Roach – General Secretary, NASUWT
• Melanie Renowden – CEO, National Institute of Teaching
• Sinéad Mc Brearty – CEO, Education Support.

The event will be chaired by Rt Hon. David Laws, Executive Chairman of the Education Policy Institute.

The aim of the event is to generate new perspectives on strengthening the future workforce and improving the learning environment for pupils, and to shape the future research agenda.

For those unable to join in person, there will be an option to watch the presentations and take part in the discussions online.
