In March 2023, Rishi Sunak ordered an urgent review of sex education in schools, following discussions surrounding the teaching of age-appropriate material. Current statutory guidance ensures that all primary schools must teach relationships education, and all secondary schools must teach relationships and sex education; however, there are ongoing conversations and controversies around the best approaches for delivering the RSHE curriculum. Through sharing best practice in whole-school approaches to teaching RSHE and engaging with parents on RSHE lesson plans, schools can work together to successfully develop inclusive and appropriate RSHE curriculums for all pupils.

• In 2021, there were 13,131 teenage pregnancies in England, a small increase from the year prior according to the Office for National Statistics
• According to the Sex Education Forum’s (SEF’s) 2022 survey, 22% of young people rated the quality of RSE as ‘bad’ or ‘very bad’
• 39% of respondents to SEF’s survey said that they didn’t learn any information relevant to trans or non-binary people
• Pupils who did not receive RSHE in schools were more likely to go on take more sexual risks, according to research published in November 2021 by the Department for Education.
