Description

According to the Department for Education (2020), a fifth of UK school pupils speak English as an additional language (EAL). Despite the dual challenge of learning both an unfamiliar language and new curriculum content, research shows that pupils arriving late into the English school system often outperform their monolingual peers (The Bell Foundation, 2020). Effectively engaging multilingual learners with mainstream schooling is pivotal for ensuring that students get the most out of education. Practitioners from across the country are invited to share their ideas and best practice in providing wrap-around support to students using EAL.

• Less than a third of pupils who start Reception with the lowest level of English proficiency progress to Competent or Fluent by the end of primary school (University of Oxford, 2020)
• There is a 14% attainment gap in English fluency between EAL learners from the most and least deprived areas (DfE, 2020)
• Unaccompanied asylum-seeking pupils and non-migrant children lag 37 months behind their non-migrant peers (Education Policy Institute, 2021).

Join us at this one day online conference to hear the latest guidance and updates in supporting students using EAL. High-level keynotes will provide strategic guidance followed by case studies demonstrating best practice from a variety of schools and local authorities. Key topics include creating an inclusive school environment, teaching English through the curriculum and improving assessments to better identify EAL learner needs. A breakout networking session will offer the opportunity to share your experiences whilst networking with other senior colleagues across the sector.

Why attend:
• Hear high-level keynotes from leading experts and authorities in teaching EAL learners • Best practice in supporting students with EAL and SEN, preparing multilingual classrooms for exams and integrating new arrivals into mainstream schools
