Event Details
Description
This webinar explores what is meant by “translanguaging” in an international education context and looks at practical ways in which teachers can use students’ own languages to enhance curricular learning.
We will look at different types of multilingual classrooms and present practical strategies and activities for using students’ own languages in the classroom in these different contexts. This will include ideas for teachers who may share their students’ home language(s) and for those who do not.
We will also look at strategies for introducing translanguaging practices to students, and for managing the use of home languages in the classroom.
Areas of focus will include:
• What is translanguaging and why is it useful for EAL learners?
• Three types of multilingual classrooms and what translanguaging strategies can be used for each type (Kerr, 2014)
• Preparing for translanguaging
• Using translation
• Using multilingual resources
• Opportunities for questions.
