Description

This online forum will provide attendees with a valuable opportunity to examine how to improve education attainment across the North of England, particularly in light of the growing attainment gap and the wider impact of COVID-19. The 2022 summer exam results showed just under a third of GCSE grades were 7+ in London, compared to just over a fifth in the North East and in Yorkshire and the Humber. The key stage two attainment figures for 2021/22 showed 65% of pupils reaching the expected standard in reading, writing and maths in London state schools, compared to only 56% in those across Yorkshire and the Humber.

Now more than ever, school leaders and teachers, and partners across local authorities, must join together to improve educational attainment for all children and young people, but particularly those in the most disadvantaged areas.

At this interactive online Forum, delegates will explore the latest developments with senior practitioners and researchers on how to improve education standards and reduce the progress and attainment gap between the South and North of England. Participants will also engage with leading schools and local authorities conducting innovative work to explore different ways to enhance the quality of education by taking an evidence-led approach with clear action plans, and offering enrichment experiences and viable progression routes to encourage pupil participation and improve outcomes, in line with the broader Northern Powerhouse agenda.

A recent Nesta report highlighted that, “children born into disadvantage are far more likely to experience poorer health, lower earnings, a shorter life expectancy and lower levels of happiness than their peers: 80 per cent of the divergence is driven by children’s circumstances between the early years and secondary school period.” As such, teachers, school leaders and support staff have unparalleled potential to have a real impact on the lives of pupils. Join with peers at this Forum to plan your next steps in turning this potential into a reality for children and young people across the North of England.
