According to government data, 75% of KS1 pupils in 2022 met the expected standard in the phonics screening check, down from 82% in 2019. Similarly, KS2 results revealed that 59% of pupils met the expected standard in reading and writing, down from 65% in 2019. These drops in levels of attainment are no surprise in the wake of the pandemic that has disrupted and overshadowed children’s education and exacerbated the attainment gap for disadvantaged pupils.

In light of this decline in attainment, the government has unveiled a series of funding, guidance, and tools to support schools in their delivery of high-quality literacy teaching, including The Reading Framework, The National Tutoring Programme, and £24 million in funding intended to boost children’s literacy. This support forms part of the DfE’s ambitious goal of ensuring 90% of primary school children achieve expected standards in literacy and numeracy by 2030.

This online training day will equip attendees with practical guidance to help improve the quality of your literacy provision and ultimately raise learning outcomes among all pupils. Attendees will work with an expert trainer to learn ways to improve and evaluate the quality of provision, explore strategies to deliver a creative and engaging literacy environment, and understand how to effectively embed a SSP programme.

Learning objectives:
• Learn best practice primary literacy planning, teaching, and learning
• Explore validated SSP schemes and choosing a high-quality programme that is best suited for your school
• Consider how best to develop effective whole school reading strategies
• Practical advise on effective approaches to identifying and providing enhanced, tailored support to disadvantaged children
• Evaluate your next steps for delivering outstanding phonics provision for all pupils.
