Description

Delivering effective EAL provision for your pupils is increasingly important. As of January 2022, over 623,000 and 17.5% of students were recorded as EAL learners in maintained secondary schools across the UK. This number will only have grown, given the rise in refugees and asylum seekers as indicated in the 2022 school census report. Furthermore, adequate EAL provision is all the more vital given the significant language loss as a result of Covid-19 disruption to learning. It is now of critical importance that schools ensure they are supporting their EAL learners at the highest possible standard.

For many teachers, EAL training has not been a significant part of their initial training or their subsequent professional development. It is vital that EAL specialists, subject and class teachers, and senior leaders work together to understand how to best support EAL pupils and enable them to thrive in school.

This one day online training day will provide attendees with practical guidance on working with pupils with EAL.

Learning objectives include:
• Understand the diverse needs of EAL learners of all ages throughout your secondary school
• Acquire new strategies that effectively support new arrivals to settle and continue their EAL journey, including guidance on assessment
• Consider the differences between how classroom and academic English is acquired, informing your teaching practices for secondary EAL learners
• Develop a strategy for leading a consistent approach to supporting the learning and growth of EAL pupils across your secondary school
• Understand how to create a positive school culture and review the role of EAL staff.
