Description

Recent statistics published by the Department for Education demonstrated that interest in taking both English Literature and English Language at A-Level has been in continuous decline since 2016. Engaging pupils with English from KS1 all the way through to GCSE and beyond is a pivotal goal both primary and secondary schools must continue to work towards. With students being out of school for several months over the pandemic, schools must also aim to support disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND through tailored literacy and reading support. By sharing best practice between schools, teachers and senior leaders can build upon the excellent existing work taking place to ensure the best possible teaching and outcomes for students learning English in schools.

• In 2021, only 35,977 of pupils took English literature A-Level, a drop of 15% since 2017
• The percentage of pupils achieving a grade 5 or above in English and Maths in 2022 was 49.6% (I can’t find English specific data)
• Less than 1% of students study books by people of colour at GCSE, a Penguin Random House report revealed in 2021
• Fewer than 3 in 10 children say they read daily, according to research by the Literacy Trust in 2022.
