Description

Pupils who have English as an Additional Language (EAL) face the difficult dual task of having to learn both the English Language and the school curriculum. Research from the Bell Foundation highlights the crucial importance of proficiency in English as a key predictor of educational outcomes. According to the latest Government statistics, there are now more than 1.6 million pupils who use EAL in maintained schools in England, a number which has more than doubled since 2006. Primary and Secondary schools must therefore act to help meet this increasing demand, to ensure that pupils of all backgrounds have full access to the curriculum and can achieve their potential.

• Research indicates that it takes as long as seven years for EAL pupils to acquire comparable proficiency to native English-speaking peers, according to the Bell Foundation
• More young people who speak multiple languages enjoy reading and read daily than their monolingual peers, as found by the National Literacy Trust
• Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children were on average 34 months behind non-migrant children in English and Maths GCSEs, according to the Education Policy Institute.

Join us at this one day online conference to hear the latest updates and strategies for teaching pupils with EAL in schools across the UK. Engage with best-practice case studies to learn tools for creating a successful EAL policy, promoting multilingualism and training teachers to deliver high-quality EAL provision. You also will have the opportunity to network with senior colleagues from the education sector, sharing strategies to improve inclusivity to help integrate EAL learners into the school environment.
