Description

Radicalisation in schools represents a severe challenge to the wellbeing of young people today, as well as an increasingly important and dangerous vector for extremism. The education sector made the highest number of referrals to the Prevent programme in the year ending March 2022, constituting 36% of all cases. To be able to make earlier interventions and support vulnerable children faster, it is essential that schools, local authorities and police work collaboratively, design digital literacy resources to mitigate the impact of online extremist content and support parents and friends to engage at-risk individuals outside of the classroom setting.

• According to the Home Office’s latest Prevent statistics release, 6406 referrals were made to the programme in the year ending March 2022
• Moreover, those aged 15-20 accounted for the largest proportion of Prevent referrals at 30%, followed closely by individuals under 15 who accounted for 29% of all referrals
• The Education sector has accounted for 32% of all referrals to Prevent since March 2016.
