Description

The government’s SEND Review in 2022 identified systemic gaps and proposed recommendations to enhance support for neurodiverse students in educational settings. In 2022 researchers at Keele University found poor staff training, limited knowledge, and insufficient assessment and screening tools have contributed to a lack of support and identification of neurodivergent children in both the education system. Furthermore, state-funded special schools are facing capacity challenges, forcing the conversion of staff rooms and therapy offices into classrooms due to limited space, as reported by Schools Week. Given these developments, schools must act now to ensure that every student’s unique needs are effectively addressed within the education system, leading to improved outcomes and opportunities for neurodiverse learners.

• 15% of all people in the UK are neurodiverse, according to NHS England in 2021
• In 2020 British Dyslexia Association stated that 80% of those on the spectrum are unidentified by the time they leave school
• Over 70% of autistic children are in mainstream schools according to the National Autistic Society’s 2021 School Report.
