Description

The PIE and the University of Portsmouth are inviting you to hear from a stellar panel during this online event as they discuss the current educational situation and future opportunities for one of the fastest growing markets for international students coming to the UK - Nigeria.

Over 59,000 Nigerians were granted UK study visas in 2022 but recent events in both countries have created some unique challenges for Nigerian students seeking education abroad.

As a key market for those wanting to come to the UK with dependants, we’ll be discussing the consequences of the UK government’s recent ban on dependants.

And what impact has the 2023 Nigerian currency crisis had on student mobility?

We’ll be hearing from a current PHD student from Nigeria about what student life is like for a Nigerian student in the UK, as well as from the University of Portsmouth on its position in the market and its efforts in creating a sustainable recruitment flow and collaborative opportunities locally and internationally.

We’re delighted to be joined by the UK's international education champion who will be sharing insights from his personal engagements with Nigeria, as well as providing a government perspective on the unique market.

Finally, we’ll have the opportunity to learn from the British Council’s regional director of higher education in Nigeria.

Hosted by Amy Baker, CEO, The PIE, panellists include:
• Bobby Mehta, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement), University of Portsmouth
• Sir Steve Smith, UK International Education Champion
• Adetomi Soyinka, Regional Director Higher Education, SSA, British Council, Nigeria
• Tolani Olabamiji, University of Portsmouth student.
