Since the removal of Covid restrictions in the UK the number of child protection plans, referrals and enquiries have increased, reaching record figures in the year 2021-2022. According to the NSPCC, young children are increasingly at risk of significant harm, including sexual abuse, criminal exploitation and online grooming. The establishment of the Child Safeguarding Review Panel in 2017, and more recent updates to the Government’s child safeguarding guidance have worked to further the protection of vulnerable children.

While there is a huge level of partnership working across the nation, between police, local authorities, schools, healthcare services and charities, there is still more to be done to improve the effectiveness of safeguarding services in the UK. It is vital for these sectors to come together and share best practice in delivering multi-agency, local and personalised solutions to better improve outcomes for children.

• The Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse reported that police forces in England Wales recorded 103,055 child sexual abuse offences from 2021-22 – the highest ever level, and a 15% rise from the previous year.
