Morning Keynote: Supporting Primary Schools in Pupil Progress and Attainment

  • Discussing the key reforms outlined in the government response to the 12 week public consultation on the long term future of primary assessments
  • Examining measures to ease the pressure on schools and teachers while implementing the changing curriculum and associated accountability framework, including introducing a new assessment at the start of reception and removing the statutory status of end-of-key stage 1 assessments
  • Understanding the new primary accountability measures, including how a school’s progress scores are calculated, as outlined in the DfE’s Technical Guide for Primary School Accountability, November 2017
  • Recognising the importance of achieving the national standard in reading, writing and mathematics in the North of England

  • Examining the link between statutory assessment and the high stakes accountability system, including the Union’s ‘Redressing the Balance’ Report and the impact of this on the recent government reforms to primary assessment
  • Exploring the issues which arise from a high stakes accountability system, such as an increased workload, a negative impact on recruitment and retention, and a culture of fear amongst teachers and school leaders
  • Analysing the results of the NAHT Commission on accountability and assessing how this will provide greater transparency surrounding accountability for primary schools
  • Considering the possibilities for shaping a more intelligent and developmental form of accountability

Case Study: Raising Pupil Attainment Through Personalised and Outstanding Teaching

  • Highlighting how the Keldmarsh Primary School attained an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted grade, ensuring that 81% of its pupils are meeting the national standard and enabling excellent progress across Maths and English
  • Examining how teachers work closely together to meticulously plan work that meets pupils’ individual needs and hold regular progress meetings in order to identify students who are falling behind and ensure that they receive relevant support to catch up
  • Ensuring that senior leaders are involved in the individual progress of students, and conduct regular checks on the quality of learning and teaching to maintain consistent improvement outcomes
  • Creating a supportive and close-knit culture amongst staff which encourages teachers to work together to continually enhance the quality of teaching and ensures the school retains outstanding and passionate teachers

Case Study: Providing Outstanding Early Years Provision to Ensure High Attainment at Primary Level

  • Gaining an insight into the learning experience of pupils at St Barnabus Church of England School, which resulted in the achievement of an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted grade for Early Years Provision
  • Using innovative learning techniques to drive pupils’ development and guide pupils entering reception with below average skills, facilitating 3/4 of pupils achieving a good level of development by the end of the academic year, and 1/3 of pupils exceeding the level
  • Working closely with local pre schools and organising home visits so that staff are well prepared and can ensure every child’s smooth progression into school, enabling pupils to feel confident, safe and enthusiastic at the beginning of their school life
  • Encouraging parents to contribute towards the assessment of their child’s progress through a ‘Wow’ wall and ensuring that parents are well informed about their child’s attainment, in order to develop a system of encouragement and fulfillment

Case Study: Developing and Implementing an Effective Curriculum that Improves Pupil Attainment in Writing

  • Gaining an insight into the approach which resulted in Archibald Primary School exceeding the national standard and achieving a progress score of 9.2 in writing
  • Utilising fun and stimulating activities, such as the ‘In My Mind’s Eye’ Project, to advance attainment and strengthen writing ability
  • Driving progress in writing through a strengthened curriculum, a skilful workforce and a forensic assessment process
  • Implementing the STA’s Guidance on Independence in Writing 2017 and highlighting the importance of creating a curriculum that provides an effective framework for advancing attainment whilst promoting independent thinking for pupils of all abilities

Case Study: Developing Alternative Assessment Tools to Transform Attainment Levels For All Pupils

  • Outlining the three year journey of Lickwell Primary School from special measures to an Ofsted rating of ‘Outstanding’
  • Using School Pupil Tracker Online and other data-based assessment tools to effectively assess whole class, individual and group progress
  • Developing specific skills assessments for Maths, Grammar and Writing, and creating tools, such as Lickwell Steps to Success Grids, to successfully monitor pupils’ progress and instantly highlight areas in which individual pupils are struggling
  • Ensuring 88% of disadvantaged pupils are achieving the national standard through utilising appropriate assessment tools

Case Study: The Role of Local Authorities in Working in Partnership to Help Deliver Outstanding Primary Education Provision

  • Outlining how a local authority can establish excellent teacher training centred on reading, spelling, mathematics and social skills to improve learning outcomes and pupil attainment in primary schools
  • Sharing how the council effectively implemented the Department for Education’s training framework, ensuring local authority officers have the most up-to-date information and deliver outstanding assessment services within their local primary schools
  • Examining how the council undertakes effective Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 sampling during the assessment processes, ensuring teachers are offering accurate and robust assessments
  • Exploring the ‘Graduated Approach’ policy, which allows schools and teachers to identify diminishing pupil attainment and gradually provide the support needed, including how this approach can be effectively implemented within a schools assessment framework

  • Securing 85% of pupils achieving above the national standard and ‘well above national average’ in reading and maths
  • Designing a curriculum tailored to meet pupil’s individual needs and drawing on first hand experiences, in order to stimulate engagement, drive learning outcomes and encourage pupils to become model ‘global citizens’
  • Sharing self-evaluation with a local authority representative and working closely across the Kingsway Community Trust to ensure that the quality of teaching and learning are outstanding and best practice is shared with partner schools
  • Meeting core accountability requirements through effective pupil evaluations, including using questioning in class as a central assessment driver, and working across the academy’s leadership structure to monitor progress
