This one day course is for school leaders who are assessing the benefits and risks to their school of joining or forming a multi-academy trust. 

Delegates will receive expert advice on the changing landscape and the options available. They will investigate the processes involved in preparing for MAT status and be given tools to assess the benefits and risks of MAT status to ensure that the leadership of the school makes the right decision.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about timelines and the application process. In addition, delegates will consider the impact that MAT status will have on the leadership, management and governance of the school, with a particular focus on the leadership of teaching and learning, staffing structures, and the structure of the governing body.

There will be focus on financial management and HR management across a MAT, and reflection on the benefits and risks of MAT status and the impact it may have on the school and the local community. The course will also cover how to develop the constitution and the legal and human resource implications surrounding this process.

Aims of this course:
• Understand the MAT application process and timeline
• Learn about the impact on teaching and learning
• Learn about the impact on senior leadership and, particularly, the school business leader
• Understand how to remain financially viable as a MAT
• Understand how to work with the regional schools commissioner
• Evaluate the role of the MAT CEO
• Understand schemes of delegation
• Understand the legal considerations and how to develop the MAT constitution.

Objectives of this course:
• Develop a clear understanding of the MAT application process
• Develop the skills to evaluate the benefits and risks to the school
• Enhance the financial management skills within the school to ensure it is in a position to remain financially viable during the growth period
• Learn how to plan strategically for growth and consider the resource implications
• Understand schemes of delegation
• Learn how to develop a plan for the constitution and understand the legal considerations.
