This one day conference will examine the next steps for the reform of maths teaching in England.

Areas for discussion include:
• general qualification reform - its impact so far
• the new Ofsted inspection framework
• teacher recruitment and retention.

The conference will be an opportunity to discuss issues and options in light of policy developments, including:
• The reform of GCSE and A Level qualifications in maths with the new GCSEs first sat in 2017 and the new A Levels sat for the first time last year
• Ofqual’s recent report on the impact of GCSE maths reform on student preparation to study A Level maths
• Ofsted’s continuing implementation of its new education inspection framework, which moves the focus of inspections towards examining curriculum breadth and how it is taught
• The recent Ofsted announcement of a thematic review into the teaching of maths within schools
• The reform of Functional Skills Qualifications in maths, aiming to better ensure that learners achieve skills that meet employer needs.

There will be keynote addresses from:
• Michelle Dyson, Director, Qualifications, Curriculum & Extra Curricular, Department for Education
• Andreas Schleicher, Director for the Directorate of Education and Skills, OECD.

Further speakers include: Eleanor Baggaley, Great North Maths Hub; Professor Paul Glaister, University of Reading; Dr Jennie Golding, University College London; Sylke Scheiner, OCR; Charlie Stripp, MEI and NCETM; and Professor Geoffrey Wake, University of Nottingham.

The agenda will include:
• GCSE and A Level maths reform so far - lessons learnt and key priorities
• The impact of qualification reform on the maths curriculum and teaching staff: the new GCSEs and A Level curriculum, introduction of core maths, and qualifications post GCSE
• Current standards of maths teaching in England - key findings from the OECD
• Maths and Ofsted’s new inspection framework - the impact so far on teaching and learning standards
• Improving the quality of maths teaching: teacher recruitment and retention, teaching styles, the impact of maths hubs and adjusting to the new inspection framework
• Maths teaching in England - key policy priorities.
