Every teacher has a responsibility to teach inclusively, ensuring that every child in every classroom has equal access to the curriculum and wider educational opportunities.

While children and young people may have different needs and requirements in order to access the curriculum effectively, quality teaching means identifying such needs and working with colleagues, the learner themselves and their families to understand how to best deliver an inclusive learning environment.

Ofsted’s latest, updated Education Inspection Framework, following changes to the previous framework in 2019, insists on a sharper focus on the substance of education, highlighting the importance of every child having access to a broad, deep and rich curriculum. Adaptations to this, for example for learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), cannot result in a narrowing of the curriculum. Such findings could be in breach of the 2010 Equality Act.

Ofsted also require schools to demonstrate how the available curriculum is ambitious, especially for the most disadvantaged learners. With the lingering impact of the pandemic-induced school closures affecting these learners more than many peers, it is crucial that every teacher is reflecting on their teaching practice to boost pupil progress through 2022/23.
