This one day event will provide an opportunity to better understand the recent changes to the English exams system including curriculum specifications and qualifications and assessment changes to help delegates effectively prepare pupils for the Summer 2021 exam and assessment season. This event will act as an in depth look into the future of the English exam and qualification system in light of the developments as a result of COVID-19, and consider the longer-term impact for pupils who will have taken formal exams or teacher-led assessments in 2020 and 2021, particularly as this relates to post-16 and post-18 pathways.

Exam boards, including OCR and Pearson, will provide the latest updates for exams that will take place from June 2021, as announced in October 2020, as well as share insights into future developments, alongside the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors. In addition, schools featured in the DfE’s coronavirus teaching guidance will share how they have effectively adapted to the impact of 2020, and how they are preparing for the forthcoming exam season, including by preparing to test pupils through internal exams.

With the Education Policy Institute (EPI) releasing recommendations in November 2020 for government to consider how to best approach changes or alternatives to the 2021 summer exams, including to allow for the possibility of grade inflation and a new series of benchmarking assessments – the same month in which the Welsh government announced the scrapping of exams for GCSE and A Level pupils across Wales next year – this event provides a timely opportunity to assess the best way forward for pupils, teachers and school leaders in England. Participants will be able to discuss the “extra measures” announced by the Department for Education in December 2020, and understand how to make best use of exam aids and additional exam sittings.
