Parents and teachers have branded last week's SATs exams a 'disgrace' as pupils only had 34 seconds to answer each of the questions.

10 and 11-year-old children in England take SAT exams in year 6 of primary school, which feature tests of reading, spelling and grammar in English and maths tests focusing on arithmetic and mathematical reasoning.

Even high performing pupils struggled to finish the tests, as pupils were required to read 2,106 words across three texts - about a third longer than last year's paper, the MailOnline reports.

Department for Education guidelines state a year 6 pupil should be able to read 90 words per minute, meaning the booklet should take 23 minutes and 30 seconds to read.
