The government must “do better” for childcare reforms to succeed long-term, the chair of the education select committee has said following the publication of a cross-party inquiry into support for the sector.
Increasing the childcare subsidy for providers, close monitoring of changes to staff:child ratios, and abolishing business rates are among a raft of recommendations proposed in a new report from the group of cross-party MPs, concluding its inquiry into support for the early years sector.
MPs heard evidence from a range of providers, parents and stakeholders, and has published a wide range of proposals to support childcare providers and remove barriers for parents and carers.
Committee chair Robin Walker told CYP Now that though the committee welcomes the increased investment in the early years sector as announced in Chancellor of the Exchequer's most recent Budget, the government “must do better” for proposed reforms to succeed.
