Grandparents have helped to save some families thousands of pounds by spending an average of 16 days looking after their grandchildren over the summer, research has revealed.

A survey has shown that without more than two weeks’ worth of help from grandparents 60 per cent of parents would have had to pay for expensive childcare. As a result young families saved an average of £960 per child during the summer holidays, according to Saga.

Four in ten grandparents have gone to stay with grandchildren and one in five has taken holiday from work to help, the business focused on over-50s found in research published to coincide with the start of the new term.
