The head of Ofsted has apologised after saying that the inspection of a school whose head took her own life had been “reviewed to death”.
Amanda Spielman, the chief inspector, made the comment at a conference last week while emphasising the importance of inspecting public services.
Three inspectors present at the event noted that she immediately retracted the comment but said that she “shouldn’t have” expressed it in those terms, the Schools Week website reported.
Ruth Perry was head teacher of a primary school in Berkshire. She died in January weeks before the publication of an “inadequate”-rated Ofsted report and her family said that she took her own life.
