Sir James Dyson has emerged victorious in an 18-month battle with Wiltshire council over his plans to donate £6 million for the expansion of his local state primary school.

The billionaire inventor wanted to give a grant to Malmesbury Church of England Primary School in Wiltshire to build a centre for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (Steam), seven classrooms and a school hall.

Dyson, 76, said his donation was conditional on Malmesbury receiving approval from the Department for Education (DfE) to expand from 420 to 630 pupils.
