In some parts of Britain, sending a child to nursery costs more than a private school place. Britain’s nursery sector is staring into the abyss, with fees among the highest anywhere in the world.

Political parties are desperate to get costs down but can’t agree how. Loosening regulations is the big idea on the right; a new nationalised childcare industry on the left. Neither idea is very popular, or affordable. We need a revolution in childcare — just not the one politicians think we do.
