Two thirds of MPs are backing calls for government to extend free school meal (FSM) eligibility to include all pupils from families receiving universal credit in the autumn statement, a survey has revealed.

The endorsement from MPs across the political spectrum comes amid estimates from the Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) that 800,000 children living in poverty are missing out on meals.

The current eligibility criteria is restricted to children living in families receiving universal credit and with an annual income of no more than £7,400 or receiving other benefits.
