Rishi Sunak should extend free school meals to more needy kids for Christmas, a Government food tsar has said.
Henry Dimbleby, who authored the National Food Strategy for Boris Johnson, said the situation was “worse than it’s ever been”, with teachers bringing in food for hungry pupils and parents having to go without in order to feed their kids.
In an interview with the Mirror, he urged the Prime Minister to offer free lunches to all households on Universal Credit “tomorrow, yesterday, for Christmas” - and said it was “such a no brainer”.
And he backed our calls for universal provision in primary schools in England, telling the Tories: “It’s not like it's kind of a nutty, left wing idea. It's going to be beneficial for the country.”
The Mirror and the National Education Union (NEU) are campaigning for all children in English primary schools to get free hot meals, in line with commitments in Scotland and Wales.
