At National Numeracy, we want to empower people to take the first step to build their number confidence. We focus on those who are the lowest in confidence and experiencing the greatest challenges.
I have spent 14 years in the Further Education sector, facilitating and supporting maths learning with a range of adult learners with SEND, and experienced many ways in which neurodivergence and learning disabilities affected number confidence and learning.
In this blog, I will provide an insight into some of the conditions and the related support needs to consider when working with learners with SEND. As SEND and neurodivergence represent such a wide spectrum of conditions and disabilities, this cannot be taken as a comprehensive guide, but as an introduction to the issues we might encounter when working to develop SEND learners’ number confidence and skills.
SEND stands for "special educational needs and disabilities." A person is described as having special educational needs and disabilities if they "have a learning difficulty and/or a disability that means they need special health and education support."
