In my previous blog post about the concept of ‘moaching’ (a combination of mentoring and coaching), I suggested there is no one correct definition of mentoring. I also recommended that it is important to develop a shared language around a mentoring scheme so that everyone involved knows what to expect.

In this article, I set out the ETF’s definition of mentoring. At the end I also suggest a task for you to complete in your setting.

At the ETF we recognise that many different forms and definitions of mentoring and coaching exist. This is ours. It is informed by the best available evidence and captures our approach at this time. Our definition is contingent, high-level, and context specific, but nonetheless it helps everyone currently involved in our mentoring and coaching programmes to understand what to expect.
