For FE institutions, teaching and learning is our bread and butter, but as leaders we’re also mindful of a host of other priorities and issues, including contributing to the national skills agenda, pursuing alternative revenue streams, and business and financial modelling. We are in multi-faceted roles that demand we develop skills, knowledge and behaviour across a range of capabilities beyond teaching and learning.
Having a set of professional standards that reflect that multi-faceted nature of our roles – going above and beyond teaching and learning, whilst continuing to recognise its importance – will be helpful in many ways. They will provide a baseline for our performance on which we can build, making tangible and consistent the expectations and aspirations of leadership and management roles. In doing so, they will help individuals identify areas in which they can improve, providing opportunities for sharing best practice and encouraging high-performing, innovative leadership.
