Universities and colleges will be empowered to investigate and potentially remove alleged sex offenders after an outcry over suspects enrolling in courses while awaiting trial.
Politicians and the public were outraged when it emerged that Isla Bryson, a male-born rapist who as a trans woman was sent to a women’s prison, had enrolled in a beauty course at Ayrshire College after being charged.
Scottish universities do not require applicants to declare whether they have ever been expelled or suspended for sexual offences.
The loophole came to light after Daniel McFarlane, 23, was jailed for raping Ellie Wilson, 24, at Glasgow university. She learnt that her attacker had been able to transfer to Edinburgh university despite being under police investigation.
