The leader of the lecturers union has been called a traitor and a sell-out over the decision to suspend this week’s university strikes.
Jo Grady, general secretary of the University and College Union (UCU), angered members by pausing action while negotiating over pay and pensions.
The far-left wing of the union said it was “shocking”, an “outrage” and a “tactical mistake” and will use meetings this week to try to overturn the decision.
The union had promised the biggest-ever strike action at 70 universities with disruption to hundreds of thousands of students, including three days this week and four next week.
It is part of the latest wave of widespread strikes that started five years ago in February 2018.
