A peer’s university talk about cancel culture and free speech was shelved after complaints from students about her retweeting a Ricky Gervais joke.

Baroness Fox of Buckley, 62, was “furious” about being disinvited by the debating society at Royal Holloway, University of London, over her support for a Gervais gag about transgender people.

She had been due to address the society on “importance of debate”, touching on issues of cancel culture and free speech, at its first in-person talk since the pandemic.

Fox said the university’s debating society was “browbeaten” into cancelling after complaints by Royal Holloway Students’ Union (RHSU). They accused her of having transphobic views, which she denies.
