The University of Strathclyde has taken ownership of three main Glasgow streets as part of plans to create a “stunning campus centrepiece”.

North Portland Street, Rottenrow and Richmond Street were transferred from Glasgow city council to the university at no cost as part of Strathclyde’s “Heart of the Campus” development plans.

The streets will be prioritised for pedestrians and students with new performance and seating spaces built on top of a covered walk through Rottenrow Gardens.

Franny Scally, chairman of Glasgow city council’s contracts and property committee, said: “The transfer of this site — lying at the heart of the University of Strathclyde’s campus — will allow public realm, green space and active travel works to take place there.
