A Cambridge college has been criticised for blocking private school pupils from entering an essay competition.
Newnham, a women-only college, runs an annual essay contest in almost a dozen subjects for pupils in Year 12, their first year of A-levels.
The competition used to be open to all girls in that year group, and previous winners included pupils at private schools. The rules have since been amended so only state school pupils can apply. The college said the contest had become so popular, marking the essays was taking up too many resources.
