A recent survey from Students Organising for Sustainability UK (SOS-UK), the Homes Fit For Study report, highlights the impact of fuel poverty on students’ wellbeing, revealing issues which need urgent attention.
Fuel poverty, which is when households need to spend a high proportion of their income to warm their home, is impacting students across the UK.
Data from the survey shows that:
- 59% of students in the private rented sector have felt uncomfortably cold in their current accommodation
- 54% of students living in the private rented sector report issues with damp and mould
- 49% of students are living in draughty or poorly insulated accommodation
While universities are working hard to ensure that students have access to appropriate accommodation throughout their studies, there is more that universities, landlords and the UK Government can do to address these concerning findings.
