Lord David Frost has warned the Government that it must live up to its promise to protect the right to free speech and not slip into complaceny. Speaking at the Adam Smith Institute on Tuesday evening, Lord Frost said No10 needs to stand up for people intimidated into silence by policing threats to freedom of expression.
Lord Frost said: “I remember my mum and dad saying to me if someone said something they disagreed with they would say it's a free country and you don’t hear people say that very much anymore and I think that’s not by chance.
“It’s because we’ve created a world of discourse where people feel uncomfortable saying what they think about things and I think it is so important to find ways of pushing back against that.
“We're taking minimal steps with the university free speech bill, with luck in the next couple of days, but it is only a first step and I would like to see the government policing free speech much more.”
Lord Frost added that he wanted the government to stand up for people “who say uncomfortable things” and to stand up “for the freedom of debate”.
