Students need to learn how to change their minds to ensure free speech is protected, according to the vice-chancellor of Oxford.
Professor Irene Tracey, a professor of anaesthetic neuroscience, said that Oxford had experienced a recent “intense period” after Oxford Union invited Dr Kathleen Stock to speak.
The event went ahead but sparked noisy protests and calls for its cancellation from those upset by the views of Stock, who has written a book defending the rights of women to single-sex spaces.
Tracey said that she understood the “passionate views from our trans and LGBTQ+ communities . . . their concerns and the importance for them to feel safe”.
