Dress codes for some May balls at Cambridge University are non-binary and quiet rooms have been installed for those overwhelmed by the noise.
Students celebrating end-of-year exams attend lavish parties at several colleges, with tickets typically costing £150 to £200 a head.
Two colleges, St John’s and Homerton, said this year that the dress code of gowns and dinner jacket with black tie could be adopted by either sex. The Daily Mail reported that they said: “We do not discriminate by gender regarding dress code.”
The dress code for the St John’s event was black tie or national dress, with dresses above the knee and white ties not permitted.
