Cambridge University has been accused of planning to “industrialise” the countryside over a proposal to build a large solar farm on green belt land.
The farm, covering some 90 acres (36.4 hectares), would be in place for at least 40 years and is intended to provide the university with 26 per cent of its energy as it aims to go net zero by 2038.
Located near the village of Barton, the site is about five miles west of the city centre.
Although the land is owned by the university, it sits within the Cambridge green belt, next to a grade II listed building, and is classified as good quality agricultural land.
