Cambridge University and its colleges are staging an unprecedented “attack” on the city’s green belt through numerous planned developments, a charity has warned.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) says the university is pursuing growth so aggressively it could ultimately lead to the “destruction” of the city.

A new report from the local branch of the charity has highlighted numerous recent proposals that encroach on the 26,154 hectares of green belt, many of these coming from expansion plans by colleges.

This includes Queens’ College seeking to build student accommodation bordering a nature reserve and Trinity College exploring the idea of creating a new science park on green belt next to the A14.
